It lets you build your own ring. Customizing everything from the style and of the band, to the cut, color, clarity, etc. of the diamond.
Even if you don't buy from it, it was a fantastic tool to just learn about all of the different aspects of diamonds and bands and what characteristics impact their price. I spent about a week casually going onto the site and playing around with the customization options to get it exactly where I wanted (quality and price wise). I enjoyed picking out all the specific things involved in the ring, and it made it feel like I had more of a sense of ownership over the entire process. Vs. obliviously walking into a diamond store and being told by a salesman what I should be buying.
It took them about a month to finish building my ring, but they keep you updated about its progress the entire time. They also have agents at the ready to answer any questions at all times. When they ship it to you, it comes in a traditional little ring box, but they put that inside of a bigger display box that also includes all of the paperwork and certified information about all of the characteristics of the diamond and band that you ordered.
Wait until Mother's Day when they have big 20-30% off sales on everything in the store.
If you have Bank of America for your credit card, make it so your online shopping is your chosen 3% cash back.
I had designed the ring I wanted within my price range ($5-8K at the time). Then at the end of the week when I was ready to finish it and submit the order, a Mother's Day weekend sale had started, and the price had dropped significantly site-wide, so my designed ring was priced even lower, and was now cheaper than my price range. I was able to go back and swap out a few things to improve the quality of the band and ring to bring it back up to the range I had decided on. I ordered it on my credit card, which I had set to my 3% cash back choice, so I ended up getting a big cash back amount.
I ended up over-estimating her ring size by about 1/2 a size, so I had to re-size it. JamesAllen offers free resizing, but my fiancee said she'd rather pay for it herself than have to ship it out. We went to a jewelry store in my hometown that was recommended to us as a reliable and trusted family business.
As much as I enjoyed/felt good about the process of purchasing online, I'd be lying if I didn't admit that part of me was a bit nervous that the ring I had purchased wasn't as quality as advertised. When I gave it to the local jeweler for a re-size, I gave him all of the paperwork that was sent with the ring. He resized it for me within a couple of days, and when I went to pick it up, I asked him what he thought of the quality of the ring because of my second thoughts. He said that he had it under his magnifying glass/microscope, and that the quality was as advertised and that I had nothing to worry about.
I highly recommend shopping online for an option - at the very least as just a method to learn a bit about what you're about to spend a big chunk of your salary on.
It depends on your budget and also your values. Because you may choose a ring made of ethical diamonds or natural diamonds. Personally I have chosen to go after my values. So I have chosen a cheaper ring for my love wife, because I know that she will appreciate it more than a ring from Tiffany. Furthermore, it's a personalized ring, I chose the size, the stone, the shape. So, it's unique. Stones are not important, money do no prove how much you love your beloved person. Take a look on the shop where you may customize a ring, and you will thank me later.
