We seem to agree, then: people "often" use the second--that is, ignorant--that is, wrong--pronunciation.
It also bothers me when people use "e.g." and "i.e." incorrectly, and even more when people actually say "i.e." or "e.g." If you're speaking, just say "that is" or "for example," okay?
