I am a senior and captain of my cross country season. After a very successful summer training regimen I expected to come into the season able to be a top guy. Right now I am actually finding myself fighting for a varsity spot. Due to the most recent meet I am #8 on the team. I am able to beat the 5 guy in most practices and the 6 and 7 guys in every practice(long runs, mile repeats, track workouts etc.). But when it comes to the meets these same guys are beating me sometimes as much as a minute. Why am I not able to perform as well as at the meets? I have always struggled with mental strength, how can I change that during the races? This is my final year of running xc in high school and I am fighting for a spot on varsity so any help would be greatly appreciated.
