Boulder has shorter commutes (usually only 2-3 miles to work, can ride your e-bike on the paths over), progressive community, solid university and you don’t live with rednecks. Plus 40min drive to MLB, NBA, &NHL games.

So what happened?

Upon arrival in San Francisco, the Baden-Baden Snowballs, a team that had fought so hard and risked much of its own personal and financial stake to journey across the globe, had its rental car broken into, with all valuables stolen in what appeared to be a professional burglary.

The tragedy not only left the Snowballs with no money, no visas, no passports, no laptops (with no backup drives containing years and years of hard work in chess preparation), no personal items (clothes, toiletries, etc.), but perhaps most terrible of all, no comfort or feeling of safety in a foreign land. The Snowballs' confidence was completely shaken.

As Inna described, around midday on Thursday the team arrived at a restaurant for lunch in a seemingly nice neighborhood. With the parking lot not too far from the front entrance, and a front door that was secured by a welcoming doorman / security guard, the Snowballs decided it seemed safe enough to quickly grab a bite.

After eating, Inna was the first to decide it was time to return to the car and finish their journey to the official hotel in downtown San Francisco. Not aware of what she was walking into, it wasn't until she was right on top of the burglars that she realized what was going on. The thieves saw her coming, grabbed the last of the Snowballs' belongings and ran off.

Salt Lake City is far and away better than SF in that regard. It's not even close.

I was born in The City and drove cab there during the '70s (night shift). It was a scary time with the SLA, the Zodiac, the Zebra killers and the Golden Dragon massacre, but still it was beautiful. Especially late at night with the neon lights reflecting off the wet pavement. It was like a light show.

Victorian houses, cable cars. hilly streets, Golden Gate Park, Fisherman's Wharf, the Ferry Building, lands end, the Mission District (listen to the Dead's "Mission in the Rain" ...."the Mission always stays the same" ), Chinatown, Ocean Beach, the Cliff House, the streetcars on Market Street, Glen Park, Forest Hill. Lake Merced, the Legion of Honor, the place was great. I haven't been there (other than to drive through on 19th Ave) in twenty years so I don't know what it's like now.

And what are you going to do about it? Nothing.

I've always liked Tony Bennett's rendition of: "I left my heart in San Francisco."

Sometimes I still sing it in the shower.

Every afternoon was foggy and cold and that's supposedly normal summer weather

Sadly have to agree on many points. Was there a few weeks ago for a few days and found much the same

Sure been to many other major cities in USA but in SF

Seems like lots of very shady people around - felt safest walking through Chinatown

Lots of homeless who are very aggressive - every city has homeless but the SF homeless seem aggressive

Hotels seem more expensive than most other major cities

Never went to Golden Gate (didn't see a reason it is a bridge) but Alcatraz was pretty cool outside of that nothing special

Have been there in mid summer when it was real cold

it is a been there done that no reason to go back city
