I think most online activists here are missing a few points.
I think the guy is a scumbag who has issues, but I am not sure he deserves all of the hate that he is getting.
The hunt was legal. He paid the money to a legit company and government that allowed him to go on the hunt. Some of the money is supposed to go back to conservation efforts for lions. This is Zimbabwe, so we have no idea if it actually goes to anything but someone's pocket, but that is not the dentist's fault.
As someone mentioned above, this is a common thing with big game hunters. They pay a ton of money to kill an animal they want to protect. So in reality he may be doing more than all of us in terms of maintaining the species. Kind of like Ducks Unlimited: guys who raise money for duck habitats and then go kill ducks... but they actually net well for the ducks...
Also, he was not "kept" in a protected park. He was a wild lion that happened to be known to roam the protected park. He was likely lured out by the poacher guides, but we do not know if that was known by the dentist.
So why are we not going after the poacher guides? No one cares about them when it was their greedy asses who are at fault.
Anyway, this is not my hill to die on because I am not a hunter, but i do think there is a lot of crazy hypocrisy here. The guy may not have even broke any laws. He likely thought he was doing something good for the wildlife.
...and why is the internet going after this guy when we have murderers every single day across each major city in the United States?
Please don't attack me as I am not in favor of hunting. I am guessing this guy is a total jerk, but does he deserve getting his life ruined when he may have acted in good faith and likely did nothing illegal?
If you're going to go the endangered species route, why not attack the lawmakers? They sold him a permit to kill a lion.
Personally, I think it should be illegal to kill the lion. It is sick and it is demented too hunt these kinds of animals for sport, so I want to focus on ways to help. I am not interested in a witch hunt on some random dentist. i think the online hunt for this guy is pretty dark. The people calling for his death are straight-up evil. Do these comments not constitute a threat? I would be worried if I were him, although he is probably in his house with rifles and compound bows at the ready.
