Maybe I am alone in not finding Sharapova enchanting in any way.
I like Serena.

No matter how politically correct society becomes, men will still appreciate slender bodies on females, and will continue to choose them. It's reality. It's also perhaps a consequence of all this tolerance. . . . Mark these words, as time goes on, men will be looking for a greater 'guarantee' that a woman really is a woman, and looking like a 'traditional' woman's body-type will become even more important.
You do realize that a "traditional" woman's body looks more like Serena than Maria Sharapova? Thin, athletically built women are a relatively modern creation.
I don't have a problem with you being attracted to "skinny" women nor do I have a problem with women who aspire to be thin especially if that slenderness is a means to achieve other goals (i.e. running faster).
Here is the issue for me: the attention men give to women's bodies in sports is almost always in a sexually charged way. The upshot of that, it seems to me, is that female athlete's face incredible pressure not only to "perform" as athletes but to maintain their sex appeal in a male driven culture that frankly has a pretty narrow view of what is "sexy." When the athlete's desire to maintain the body image necessary to be attractive starts to conflict with the body necessary be successful in athletics then sport almost always loses. Put differently, to be successful in athletics, women almost always have to be both athletic and traditionally beautiful. If one is a fan of female athletics regardless of an athlete's appearance, then this is a loss.
Note that his is remarkably different from male athletes whose bodies are--at least in general--celebrated for their performance not their appearance. In the panopticon of male sports there is such a range of body shapes and appearances that are not only accepted but lauded and celebrated.
The point, by the way, is not that men should find all women attractive just as women are certainly not attracted to all men. The point is that women should be able to pursue athletics without having to negotiate a gauntlet between athletic success and preserving some cultural notion of how a "woman" should look.
YES
thank you

Even most athletic men aren't built like Serena, she's like a American college football player.
It's called specificity...tennis players practice hours a day. Their time is much better served spent on the court than in the weight room.
Sharapova: "Who is Lauren Fleshman?"

Indeed. I have plenty of respect for Lauren Fleshman, and of course she has a right to express her ideas just as any of us do, but her "blast" of Maria Sharapova has about as much significance and impact as a gnat blasting a tiger.

Also: the NYtimes would never, ever write an article about men and their body image. Because they don't have nearly the same issues that women do and people don't care about mens bodies in the same way.

Why can't women be the same way? They just can't win, a woman is either too "feminine" or too "masculine." The interesting thing after reading this thread is, men don't seem to care, most like Williams's or Sharapova's body. It's other women who seem to be criticizing them the most.
So the best women's tennis player of the past 10-15 years obviously lifts weights yet to beat her you decide to stretch? Maria is more concerned with her endorsements than her winnings. She's also uneducated about weights and has the same mentality as every female I've ever trained. It is sad. Maria could get loads stronger while not gaining mass and putting mphs on her serve.
Also...Williams beefy look is all about her genetics and improper lifting routine...if not her pharmaceutical bill.

Seems like the other women's tour players are upset they can't beat Serena, and are trying to find a psychological edge on her, or an excuse for themselves.
I think it's hilarious that Maria believes stretching and preventative exercise (whatever the hell that is) are more "beneficial" to tennis. She's been proven wrong almost every time she's gone up against Serena on the court.
The only game in which she can beat Serena is the endorsement game. And that game is ruled by the male member.
Depending on the year, Maria Sharapova's income ranges from 26-30 million( 22 of which comes from endorsements). Lauren Fleshman wouldn't be so quick to criticize if she had endorsement deals like this to retain. People on the lower end of the income chain face much less consequences for the ways in which they choose to live their lives, especially over social media.
good post.
soon we won't be allowed to consider anyone good looking. equal pay for equal looks.
works both ways. male athletes are paid more if they are good looking. Ricky Fowler gets huge endorsements for his looks. It's not FAIR, other golfers are better! whah!
Serena has the classic look of a woman who has abused HGH and synthetic testosterone.
There is no one body image that is sexy, everyone has their own preferences. If a woman wants to make a career out of sports, then she needs to understand that she may become less attractive to certain people. I thought this whole movement was about doing whatever you want with your body and not feeling insecure about it. So what if people don't find you attractive? you can eat, do and wear whatever you want because no one else's opinion should matter to you. Now I feel like it has gotten to the point where women are forcing men to think they are attractive. If I don't like a person that is overweight, because I find that extra fat unattractive, I am now a sexist bigot. Again do whatever you want with your body and be confident with it, but if someone doesn't find you attractive than you have to deal with it. It's a double standard, to each his/her own seems to apply to only Women now, a woman can choose what her body is, but a man can't choose what he finds attractive?

You're right about her beefy look being Serena's genetics and it is an unrealistic body image to expect men to live up to.

The name Caster Semenya ring any bells for you?
That williams women looks to beefy to put on a Fashion cover, and she needs to win prize money, because she will not compete with Sharapova in the world of business.

What has Maria Sharapova won, ever and recently? Is she still even relevant in tennis?
