take a stab at coupling song to the groups?
my nongroup song of the year--a change is gonna come/sam cooke
I'll bite on a few (no cheating). Unfortunately, this was over a decade before I was born.
Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
Them - Gloria
Guess Who - kinda early for them. These Eyes, maybe?
Detroit Wheels - Devil with the Blue Dress
The Yardbirds - For Your Love (Clapton on guitar)
Lovin Spoonful - Summer in the City
The Kinks - Lola
The Byrds- Mr. Tambourine Man
The Animals - Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood? House of the Rising Sun, maybe?
The Temptations - Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch?
The Beatles - the whole Revolver album
The Rolling Stones - biggest hit of the year is probably (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
Some of that Motown stuff is kinda hazy.

I don't think the Guess Who had much going on in 1965. They wouldn't hit it big until 1969-70.

...hopefully you get the point
Marvin Gaye and you pick these two. Not terrible songs but how about "What's Goin' On". Tune is absolutely iconic at so many levels.
Is that you dad ?
Guess Who covered this 1960 Johnny Kidd & the Pirates Brit Hit in 1965.
This Chad Allen & Reflection later Expressions did Shakin All Over and was the first song credited as Guess Who? The group had been around in some form or another since 1958
By '67 Chad Allen was gone Burton Cummings was the vocalist and the Guess Who tag was permanent.
and you are right These Eyes was Guess Whos next big hit 1969 or 1970
Otis and Carla covering Sam Cooke
