You dont think that if they repurposed some of those Sumo wrestlers they couldn't produce some world class throwers? Of course they could.
They don't care about throws. Good for them.
Include any martial arts in that.

Throwing is about Levers, and application of force over a period of time. people of Asian decent are on average lacking in levers, and don't have the body types to bulk up well. However track and field isnt even close to a national sport in Japan. Sumo, Martial Arts, Baseball and Futbol. Track and field in japan is akin to playin chess in america. Im highly certain that if any mass popularity could be amassed for the sport, Japan would have no problem finding one or two throwers every olympic cycle to field, and they would do well. Turning to genetics to predict athletic performance is the same thing that was/is done to blacks in this country, and it is scientifically unfounded.
Also the Japanese national Discus record is very poor (60.22 from 1979).
Probably there aren't good shot put/discus throw coaches in the entire country.
But 1:45.75 (800) and 3:37.42 (1500) also are very mediocre records, considering other endurance records like 2:06.18 by Toshinari Takaoka in the Marathon, or 1;00.25 by Atsishi Sato (HM)
how about this guy who went 24-0 in Japan
and 13-5 in the Majors.
All the big guy talent in japan is going to sumo. That's way more of a factor for their poor shot put record than genetics. The top sumo guys make tons of money and bang got chicks. Seriously look up the chicks they date. It's mind boggling.
