Need to buy wife a laptop HELP!

I was thinking something like the Lenovo ThinkPad T450 but maybe not as expensive. I have always been a thinkpad guy but know they can get expensive.

I just checked Lenovo's site and they claim you can downgrade their product to Win 7.

Another Thinkpad user from waaay back. They've cheapened them over the years, but they seem okay.

I did the "downgrade" to Win7 which cost $60 . . .uhh. but I can switch it back to 8 Pro I think for free.

Now I am going to be EXTREMELY jealous of the wife!

If it's only being used to browse the web, Netflix, social media, etc., just go with a Chromebook.

You can get some very decent laptops around $200 - $300 from the likes of Dell and HP. Newegg.com has some great deals.

Keep in mind that Windows 10 is expected to be released at the end of July. Windows 7 will seem pretty outdated at that point. Windows 8 users will get a free upgrade to Windows 10. I'm not sure about Windows 7.

Whoops. I didn't catch this when I first replied. Scratch the Dell XPS, because you're paying good money for amazing graphics on a thin beautiful looking low bezel laptop. Since that doesn't matter, then save your money.

Like some of the others said, you can likely get by with a $300 - $400 laptop. I never used to care for Dell, but they've been making some really solid laptops lately. Well constructed.

A friend of mine repairs computers for a living.

Don't get anything but a Toshiba or an HP. His advice can be fluid based on how hard certain brands and models are to repair. I.e., he used to love Lenova, now he hates them.

I always relied on him for purchasing advice with my startups.

You should take her to test the keyboards, unless she is going to get an external keyboard.

I have a macbook air, and a Sony Vaio with bluray as my media slave.

More specifically, HP Elite Book and Toshiba Portege/Kira models are well built with top quality components. The other models are junk made of mostly cheap plastic. Lenovo has been going down in quality, but the higher end Thinkpads are still decent. I've been really impressed with the new Asus Zenbook models. Top quality components and the build quality is really good. Comparable to older generation Thinkpads and modern MacBooks.

The E6520 Laptop Core i7 2.80GHz 4GB 250GB models with Win 7 go for $250 or a little more.

The Precision M4600 Laptop Core i7 Quad 2.50GHz 8GB 320GB models with Win 7 go for maybe $100 more.

These have metal cases and are quite durable. I bought a refurbished laptop from their store a few years ago for my high school aged son, who doesn't always take good care of things. It's still running great.

1. Don't worry about Windows 7 vs. Windows 8. Windows 10 is coming out in a couple of months and you can (and should) upgrade for free from either version.

2. Lenovos new trackpads are horrible. They tried to copy Apple's trackpad while preserving the "Thinkpad nipple". What you end up with is basically useless so you'll have to use an external mouse if you want to be productive. Other than that, Thinkpads are nice workhorses.
