What I have a hard time understanding about Summit is that this drama seems to affect them year after year.
Aren't there other runners who have left the team or were kicked off for various and sundry reasons?

You obviously don't know OSAA rules. A coach is not allowed to coach his athletes during the time between State XC and the first day of track practice. It doesn't matter if they call it a "club" or not. Other states are different so you might be applying your state's rules to Oregon's. In Oregon, this is illegal. Mclatchie should be fired for not only violating this rule, but doing so brazenly and in doing so attempting to extort an athlete.

(McLatchie violated OSAA rules in having anything to do with the NXN trip and further violated them in trying to pressure Maton to run. Post state is hands off in Oregon...100%. If anyone should have been cut loose, it should have been McLatchie.)
Above is off base, as I believe the team that raced in Boise is a club not school affiliated - Central Oregon Track Club. In reality he doesn't have to coach anyone after the State Champs and if he does, then he can decide whom he coaches.
There are at least ten sections I could quote to show McLatchie is in violation for even mentioning NXN to an athlete whom he coaches. Below is just one example.
For being so brazen about the whole thing OSAA should really expel him from the entire Association.
3. Q. What are the penalties if a high school coach violates the Practice Limitation Rule by coaching more than two members of his or her team in an out-of-season program?
A. Rule 5, “Violations of Regulations – Penalties” - outlines violations of rules and penalties. As outlined in Rule 5.2., violations of any rule of the OSAA could include probation, forfeiture, fines, suspension, or expulsion from the Association. The Executive Board would determine the penalty

5. Q. May high school team members belong to the same club team?
A. Yes, if the high school team members independently try out and/or belong to the same club team through no influence or direction from the high school coach, then no violation would occur.
