6:11 isn't trash.
Actually, freshman year I went from 6:10 to 5:30 in the mile in spring track (also a girl). I went from the 6:10 to ~5:45 in March/April, and then dropped another 15 seconds to run 5:30 in the conference championship. So don't worry if you aren't hitting your goal right away.
I can't remember many specifics about my workouts then but I know they were all from Jack Daniels since that is what my coach uses. A lot of 20 minute tempos and 800 interval work.
