That's way to generous for the distance. I would give him 4 flat at best, which could also be generous if Casey is one of those athletes who perform well at altitude. Btw, I don't care what any charts says, I know from personal experience that giving an athletes 8 seconds for a mile conversion is crazy.

This is so stupid. He ran 4:05. He's not a sub 4 miler and won't be until he actually does it. I don't care what these bullshit conversions say. If he's as good as they say, he'll travel to a sea level track and then actually run under 4. Until otherwise, he's at 4:05. He also didn't even make it out of regionals last year. Also gimme some proof that he ran 4:01 earlier this season! I don't see any proof of that here:

I get your point (no way is this a 3:56, let alone sub 4) but a 4:05 at altitude is not the same as 4:05 at sea level.

I don't have proof, but I and about a hundred other people were there at the Hartnell track. I timed it on my watch and got 4:01.18. The "official time" was 4:01.41. He ran alone the last lap.

So Casey ran 3:59 in this facility in 2011 (banked?) and ended up the season at 4:01 for third at NCAAs and 3:41 for outdoor. Doesn't sound like any more than a few seconds should be allotted, even for an unbanked track.

True, but almost no one runs a PR for the mile at NCAAs. The race is virtually always tactical for a few laps because no one wants to be the sacrificial lamb. The flat track at MSU is obviously slower than the old banked boards, though I would not guess by how much.

Eric Mack broke 8 in the 3k at........MSU in Bozeman!! On the then banked track.

Eric Mack did not break 8 in Bozeman. It was about 8:04 or so on the banked track.

Open track meets in Bozeman on February 6 & February 20.

Mile: 4:05

3k: 8:19

800: 1:50

So, he is not a sub 4 miler, sub 150 800 runner or sub 8min 3k runner.

There is a reason iaaf, and usatf do not accept 'converted marks'.

Are those inpressive marks for beign run at slight altitude? Yes. Do they gaurentee the conversions he recieves ? No.

I don't understand why the NCAA is the only governing body that accepts these marks.

Doesn't matter if you like it or understand it. I am not saying I disagree with you. But he competes in the NCAA so as long as they honor them thats what it is. (Yes I know technically he did not run that, but whats on the list is what the NCAA is working with)

Lighten up, Francis. It only counts for qualifying to NCAAs. That's it.

And now he is a sub-4 miler, ran 3:55.27 at the Husky Invite, so maybe there is something to this 'conversion crap.'

Somebody posted saying this guy is "undertrained" and runs like 40 mpw. This makes me really suspicious of his 3:55. You're telling me this guy who ran 4:11 last year and 4:09 is running a faster mile than Ed Ches who was in the Wannamaker mile?

Regardless, I do sincerely hope this is all legit because it would be a great story.
