So someday will people look back at Alan Webb and say he ran that fast in high school then an American record then the Olympics too. And they will say if not for the war Webb would have progressed and won gold in the 800 and 1500 in 3 consecutive Olympics and eventually run a 3:42 mile. If not for that darn war.
Just maybe it is the lack of that reality that make us view people nostalgically and romantically and wistfully. Kennedy became a greater president and more loved the minute he was gone.
