It may be daunting to go out of the airport at night, but at this time last year I spent 9 days in Mexico City. Stayed in an inexpensive hotel near Zona Rosa. Ran every other day over to Chapultapec Park where I had a beautiful 2 mile circuit, for 6 to 10 mile runs, finish up a steep little mount. Easy place to run in the park and the route there wasn't bad. Sunday morning the main road Reforma shut down until 11 am and runners and cyclists came out in droves. This took me by surprise otherwise I'd have jumped into the 10k race that just finished. Many really nice residential neighbourhoods to walk around if you like city architecture. My wife and I ate cautiously but in a few days were eating everywhere including at market and street stalls - good local food, had no problem whatsoever with food or crime. Drank bottled water and beer. Impressive city, affordable, would love to go back, do more running at altitude.
HOmbre, I will second what Running said about Colonia Condessa, it was unreal when I went there (was evening), felt like a cross between san francisco and italy, little sidewalk cafes everywhere, with sidewalk seating, just a very very tony neighborhood (my cousin lived there, rent for a 2bdr apt was $2400/mo USD, ouch!), I very much doubt you will regret going, and you should have plenty of time, as "Running" stated.

Hmm this sounds enticing. You think 9 hours is enough to have a good time considering the time it would take to get back into the airport?
I doubt a hotel will let you use their facilities without paying. But you might be able to just walk in, run with your luggage in the corner of the fitness room, and clean up in a lobby bathroom without getting noticed. Or you could try calling to negotiate a discounted rate to use the fitness room and a shower.

Just play the Gringo Card. A white dude who looks like he belongs will rarely be questioned. Have fun, Mexico City is great!
Soooo, were you going to tell us what you ended up doing?
I'm headed there tomorrow night, still debating if I'll actually venture out of the aeropuerto
