LOLZ. Do you realize I make more than either one of them? With no degree and a few years apprenticeship, I'm making $70k plus. And that's just a starting point. Sure sometimes the work smells like sh!t. But then, I won't be outsourced to Mumbai like my engineer friends..
A talented software engineer can make damn near $150k right out of undergrad. A nurse with only an undergrad equivalent degree makes what like $60k and maybe $90k at best?

I'm not an engineer and I don't think every engineer is brilliant. But they're still way smarter than nurses, on average, and most don't work 36 hours/week either. What gives?
There are about half dozen different types of nursing credentials, if you are talking about a BSN, in terms of difficulty it's comparable to engineering. if you leave high school with a 'legit' foundation in Algebra, Trig, Geometry and Calc, engineering is not too difficult. I have lots of friends and family members who are engineers and I have heard this many times. You have to be good at math and knowing how to answer some questions of an SAT exam is not enough. Most nursing programs have organic chem 1 and 2, which are pretty tough courses. The fact is, nursing and engineering are similar in that both disciplines don't deal with abstracts.
With that said, engineering programs receive better students and that's because most Americans kids are not good at math and the few that are tend to go into engineering. Also, the engineering licensing, the PE is more involved than the NCLEX.

Why are you trying to compare just the highest paid part of engineering, a large and diverse field?

So does that mean WalMart shelf-stockers are on par with brain surgeons?
I've never needed a brain surgeon but I do enjoy being able to find the items I want to buy at the local Walmart. In my world, the shelf stockers are not only on par, they are much more important.
Where do nurses have to take Orgo? I don't know any who have taken that course and I know a lot of nurses.
They typically don't. And when they do, it is very watered down from what the pre-meds have to take. Not sure what that poster was thinking.
Kim Kardashian makes 100x more than nurses and engineers. Do you think Kim Kardashian is smarter than nurses and engineers?

Nurses don't have the luxury of 8-5. most have to work wacky hours especially starting out so pay compensates for that.
Working with people's healt is a huge risk. It's also very draining. They also work pretty damn hard. Everyone is going to need a nurse at some point in their life, not everybody is going to need an engineer.
Nearly anything and everything you deal with on a daily basis was designed by an engineer. wtf are you talking about?
Wut? The roads the nurses drive to work on, the buildings they work in, etc etc. Engineers have a lot to do with those things. I do believe that nurses deserve equal compensation, and that their program of study is as rigorous. Many engineers are classified as professionals and are "salaried" which means they often get squeezed to work far more hours than they are paid for by many private sector employers. Fair or not that's the way it is.
My point specifically was NURSES $90K AT BEST VERSUS ENGINEERS $150K AT BESTIs that a clear enough comparison? I don't see what's disingenuous about that. Regardless, that's a complete conjecture and was never purported to be more than that. In typical letsrun fashion the arguments in this thread are all baseless with zero sources, facts or evidence supporting anything. I'd do some research but I just don't care.

Successful salespeople make more $$$ than nurses for the same reason a select few nurses make a salary similar to most engineers. While nurses must deal face-to-face with a wide variety of sick people, many engineers are busily designing larger bicycle helmets to protect their fat, smelly heads.
Are you questioning market forces?
Why does Beyonce make more money then most engineers?

It's not market forces when nurses band together to pass all kinds of protectionist laws.
Nurses are extremely sympathetic politically, especially compared to engineers. Almost everyone knows one or has one I their family. They're mostly women and they're trained to act "nice." A caring but not that bright 25 year old blonde always makes a good foil to the "arrogant doctor" of whom so many are secretly jealous.
In short, the politicians will always vote with nurses and they get all kinds of favorable protections ensuring salaries well above what a free market would bear.
For the love of god can you cite at least one of these "PROTECTIONIST" laws? Just because you heard it on Fox News DOES NOT MAKE IT TRUE.

Ever hear of a guy named Milton Friedman? See chapter 9 of his book, "Capitalism and Freedom" and prepare to get schooled by a Nobel laureate.

So in response to a simple question about current laws, you refer the guy to a book from the '60s? I see you have a strong understanding of the situation.

If I wanted a bloejobb, Kim Kardashian would definitely be worth 100x more than an engineer and 50x more than a nurse so that would still make the nurse twice as valuable as an engineer.

Would it have been easier to understand if I linked to a buzzfeed article instead of a book by the most influential economist of the last 50 years?
