I've done both approaches in different seasons and run very similar times. How you spend your minor days (i.e. non-long run, non threshold, non interval days) has only a marginal impact on your fitness. Do what's easiest and works best with your schedule. It's certainly easier to get more miles in on doubles than singles if time allows.
The purpose of base building is to run as many miles as possible, that's most likely going to be in doubles.
I wish I had spent on summer or winter when I was younger doubling a ton rather than doing whatever non-sense i was doing.
Is it smart to still do like 20 minute tempo runs during the time of building up my mileage to 100 or should everything be easy 8:00/mi easy runs? Cause I still want to keep some leg turnover and have been including 1 20 minute tempo run during the week, but else than that it is all easy 7:30/mi to 8:30/mi pace runs
