Everybody all up in arms about WADA (and I guess by extension USADA) and the influence they have over IAAF, UCI, etc (and USATF and USAC). Here's the deal from my perspective, and mine has got to overlap with many of yours if not specifically the crowd that posts here regularly.
We all know that none of these organizations makes actual laws that courts enforce. Legislatures do. Neither Mo nor Lance himself are in jail, on parole or probation, paying fines that go into a particular nations general fund like taxes do, etc. Lance was sponsored by the US gov for a while and that was the cause of some hot water but Contador has had no legal issues at all as neither Astanna nor SaxoBank is a government that makes and enforces laws.
So, all of these sports organizors can only do one thing if they catch you breaking their rules: not allow you to participate in sports events they control. I I probably break NFL rules daily and the NFL can't punish me in any way other than making me pay a 'fine' to them to still be allowed to play or prohibiting me from playing altogether.
Ditto USATF. Now I am old now but when I was younger and faster I was not subject to their rules since I was not a member and never agreed to obey them. I was not on 'the list' that gets mentioned even in interviews with trail ultrarunners. If you are not on 'the list' you do not have to tell anyone where you are and no one will ever come by randomly to test you. The USADA will simply not know you exist. Their rules do not apply to you any more than NBA rules do.
Now for a sprinter this is a problem. Bolt needs Olympiads and WC. Distance runners need road races and I have run a lot of them and never came across one that banned anything. Anyone here run Boston? Probably half the MB readers. Did the entry form have a place where your signature certifies that you agree not to use Xenon, Argon, goddamn bottled O2, or anything else? Neither does the Turlock Turkey Trot.
Don't be an idiot. Don't join a fedration. You cankt go to Nat Champs. Big deal. You are still welcome to run and win Peachtree, Chicago, Fukuoka, the Great North Run, and indeed, the Turlock Turkey Trot. So .... Whom exactly out ther does thid effect (or affect, actually)??
