A few sources have Jason Robards, Jr. running a 4:18 mile as a high school junior.

that this claim is unverified. Penn Relays director and T&F historian Dave Johnson published a list of all sub 425 HS milers thru WWII and no Robards . Thread on T&Fnews site from years ago iirc Zamperini's 4:21x from 1930s still headed the list. JRjr was born in 1922 so he was out of HS in 1940 or '41 at the latest.

I know Carvey is right because the real Garth Algar told me.
OJ is still in the slammer but he ran 9.3 100y and was on a world record 4X100 relay team for USC.
He ran at Carlmont HS and was pretty decent. I raced against some of his teammates who were good runners too. This was on the roads post HS.
According to the Globe and Mail, Rob Ford, Mayor of Toronto, ran a mile in under 6 minutes in high school.
"It was a short and intense two weeks of back-to-back practices, which was necessary to inject cohesion into a mixed bag of young men who didn’t know each other. Before each practice, they were told to run a mile. If they completed the run in under six minutes, they didn’t have to complete it again for the rest of training camp. But if they failed, they had to keep running it at the start of every practice until they came in under the mark.
After a few days, there was only one person left chugging around the track.
“I remember Rob, who was about the same size as he is now, running this thing every day for like two weeks until he was the only guy running – but still giving it 100 per cent at the beginning of every practice until he finally made it,” said Mike Lawler, a former Scarlett Heights coach."

"Attempted to qualify for the 1972 Olympics as a miler, running a time of 4:06."
It's too bad he didn't make it, because as the only entrant in the mile run in the Munich Olympics, he would have been guaranteed a gold medal.
I'm pretty sure that John Popper of Blues Traveler and Luther Vandross both dipped under 2:00 for the 800. Aretha Franklin was a decent 400 type, maybe 55-56 at a D-III school.
Neil deGrasse Tyson ran something like ~4:20 in the mile.

A bit of a stretch to sub elite
Skinhead O'Connor claimed to have run 11.3 at school. That would be impressive as it would also be a senior Irish record
Hasn't Eminem (Marshall Mathers) run a quick 800? This has come up a few times.
not 'famous' exactly (although his wife is), Jesse Strutzel did a bit of acting before going on to become a director.
Was a 1.45 800m runner in the late 90's at UCLA
Gordon Ramsay is a triathlete - has completed an ironman in the low 14hrs. God knows the people on his shows couldn't run 5 minutes.
Uzo Aduba of Orange is the New Black was an all-conference sprinter at BU...

I was being tongue in cheek. I also posted the bit from the Globe and Mail as an example of how most people in the general population - including journalists apparently - have no clue about running times. As the article points out (and I've seen pictures that confirm this) Ford had the same build in high school as he does now. He probably weighed close to 300 lbs and was an offensive lineman. There is zero chance that he - let alone the entire football team - ran under 6 minutes for a mile. I'd be moderately surprised if he could run under 6 minutes for a kilometer.

Pretty sure it's BS. From his wiki:
"After spending three years in ninth grade due to truancy and poor grades, he dropped out of Lincoln High School at age 17."
Highly doubt he would be invested enough to take part in an after school program, let alone even be allowed to run.
Johnny Mathis was a high jumper at San Francisco State University. Like Cosby, his performing career took off while he was in school.
Rudyard Kipling was a 430 miler
Kirk Acevedo who played Miguel Alvarez on Oz has run maybe 3:08 in the marathon and that's recently I believe. It's not great but for some no name actor it's not that bad. Joel McHale ran 3:18 ish or something like that.

Good call - I tend to agree with you.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
