I recall Matt as a member of an Oregon relay team that ran 3:00.81 at the NCAA championships in Sacramento. His teammates were pretty amazing, but Matt was the glue. I met Matt several times, as well as his parents. Great individual and great family. All the best to Matt for success in whatever his future endeavors may be.

Why did he never run in open races professionally?
Anyone know his age?
He did run in open races professionally.
His age is very easy to look up using the popular search engine Google.

Rather fast twitch for a white guy.
very impressed - I've (casually) noticed him as a pacemaker/rabbit over the past several years. Watched each of the videos and he was tough then, productive now. Nice/impressive PRs. Sad to see him go.
Definitely sad to see him go. I was really excited when he joined the Beasts. But glad he's happy and has no regrets. Hope the rest of life brings him as much happiness!

He was our answer to domestiques, and arguably the best we've seen. It'll be interesting to see who takes up the mantle.
He made a great career choice; and I'm sure he'll inspire some folks in the future who find themselves similarly on the cusp. He was willing to forego a shot at individual glory and got to really live the life of an elite.
I went to high school right by Matt and ran at the same time as him. I remember watching him run 46.6 and being extremely impressed.
Ha, great story.
I remember that guy on York. He was their best sprinter from 100-400 his senior year. Pretty sure he choked at state in every solo event, but he did win state in a relay.

Bye Matt Thanks
Well, we now have an answer to the "most significant poster on Letsrun" thread!
Gray Zone!

REALLY?
Sadly, on the American scene he is too old. The barriers to entry would be hard, and even if he had the talent- it could take him a few years to get down the techniques and work his way to the professional level.

You're exactly right. He was the favorite in the 200m and 400m his senior year and choked in both (didn't even make the final in the 200m). Came back to anchor the winning 4x400m though.
That guy is the shadiest dude ever...which makes total sense that he is now a cop in the Chicago suburbs. Google his name and you can find all sorts of venom (even from his own brother).
Back to Matt, he was a nice dude the few minutes I met him. He was destined for bigger and better things out at Oregon and beyond. Good luck to him!

He has a PR of 45.19, which I would not consider barely being able to run 50 flat.
I saw Matt Scherer break the Illinois State Record in the 400 by running 46.6. My teammate ran a school record 48.8 that day and came in a ......distant second.
Probably could have had more fame as a competitive racer, but maybe the only guy to gain 'any' fame as a pacer.
Nice work, Matt.
Maybe do a search of the guy before you make a silly comment. He ran 46.6 in high school. I know this because I was at the meet.
Guy probably also could have ran under 4:00 minutes for the mile. Had great range during his career as a pacer.
