If you were curious you could pay $20 to the Delaware Secretary of State and see who the holders of Airbnb Inc are. Again, he might be promised something that is under a general, "manager compensation" tranche.
A friend worked at a company that just listed, for roughly the same period as CL 2009-present. He is the financial controller. He is now able to trade up to a bigger house. He is not buying a Citation.

FWIW, I was hired in marketing for a start-up in 2002 that was sold in 2008 for $40M. The company started in 1999 and I was the 8th employee.
I was not a founder and had no equity in the company other than what I was given as part of my entry package. I left the company after it was sold - about a year after - receiving just north of $400K. Not life changing, but I cannot complain.
Only telling b/c I would imagine that ABNB will sell for well more than $40M and I would wager that CL asked for some equity when he took the job.

Equity is the only currency a company has. So if the business is struggling, and most do, they need all the ammunition they can muster to stay afloat.

So, you're saying that Uber is a deal, that company that charged over $200 a ride when it snowed in NYC? Of course, the cars go through pot-hole filled streets because the cities and states lose the tax money to fix them.
It has to be said that it's more trouble than it's worth, particularly in foreign countries.
And people paid $200 for an Uber ride. Why? Because getting a ride in a comfy car during a snowstorm was worth more to people than having $200 in their pockets. They might have done it begrudgingly, but they did it nonetheless. If people didn't shell out $200 for an Uber ride in the snow, then Uber wouldn't charge $200 for a ride in the snow. They wouldn't have any customers. Supply and demand. Simple as that. This is what is commonly known as a "market."
People who piss and moan about Uber jacking up prices in times of high demand annoy the hell out of me. Got a problem with it? Then get your industrious little ass in gear and start your own car service and charge $150. Or $50. Or $1. Whatever you want. You won't stay in business long, but by God, you'll feel good about yourself. Again, it comes down to the fact that Uber (and any other business) will charge whatever people are willing to pay for their product or service. If people don't like it, they'll vote with their wallets. But let the users of Uber (the "market") decide what is a fair price. Your personal opinion of a "fair price" for Uber's service is about as meaningful as my opinion of what you should wear to work tomorrow.

Not true at all. I work at a MAJOR SF once-was-a-start-up and only the top guns have equity. Everyone else are serfs.

I don't get how AirBNB became so attractive to investors. Isn't it basically a platform for illegal transactions? Is it really all that different than a platform facilitating illicit drug transactions or prostitution? I'm tired of reading how brilliant the AirBNB founders are... they created a website that charges $ for facilitating short term rentals yet they had zero knowledge of the laws or regulations regarding short term rentals. Tell me how that is brilliant?
