I mostly wear a shirt on hot days so I can wipe the sweat off my brow. Other reasons include sun protection and bug protection. I really only go shirtless if I'm trying to even out my tan lines.

In summer I run barechested as much as possible. It feels so much better to have a breeze on your skin than a sweat soaked shirt. Sorry to hear some guys now run with their chests shaved but mine is staying hairy and I don't see why anyone should object to that.
When the humidity is around 90% (where it has held in the Southeast US for the last two months or so), wearing a completely-soaked shirt that weighs 5 pounds is pointless.
I'm 45, don't have moobs, have almost no chest hair; I do my push-ups. I look good with my shirt off. But even if I had saggy man-tits and had nasty patchy gorilla hair on my back, I'd still run shirtless.
The people here who find it objectionable spend way too much time checking out other mens' bodies. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
For you doubters, here's my photo. I dare you to tell me I'm not looking good.

no it has nothing to do with being smaller, it is more comfortable to wear a sports bra than not while running! Most elite female runners are not 'well endowed" I can not name any.....
The reason small-breasted women wear a sports bra (under a tech shirt) is because a women's nipples are more sensitive (and protruding) than a man's.
It is an evolution of the species thing.
You know I am right on this!
OP
Some people are more concerned about sun damage these days

Two words: man boobs. If you're 39, you've got 'em.
55 no man boobs. Keep running and doing some push ups and pull ups with some other ab work my young, naive friend.
Ab work, push ups and pull ups are completely, utterly irrelevant for man boob formation. Man boobs are body fat. You get them as you age due to declining testosterone.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume your powers of self-perception rival your understanding of exercise and nutrition and hence conclude that yes, you most definitely have man boobs

Keep the T levels up. Squats and deadlifts.
Squats and deadlifts briefly and marginally increase Testosterone, as does tanning and having sex. It doesn't increase permanently increase your testosterone by a non-negligible amount.
The notion that it does is perpetuated by lifters who want to believe squats and deads are the bestest exercises of all time and the answer for everything.
To actually keep your T level ups as you become older, you need to inject it. Get a TRT or just buy some test and you can keep low bodyfat in abdominal areas and the chest even as you become old.
Otherwise, enjoy your man boobs but spare us the sight by keeping your damn shirt on.

Same here, 55, nmbs. Do chest (bench), arms, shoulders, abs 2-3 times a week. I'm only 156 too.

So you contend that exercise (ab work, push ups, and pull ups) doesn't help reduce body fat since 'Man boobs are body fat'?
Running shirtless signals that one is a real runner, just as pro tennis players practice shirtless. And serious guys usually have the upper body for this. I remain justified by decent Dallas runners who wear tight technical shirts in summer. Maybe they didn't get the memo.
I agree. Plus, running with a shirt on is known to the state of California to be a carcinogen.
My wife likes the way the sweat on my shirt accentuates my man boobs
Glad I stumbled on this forum. OK- it's settled then. I'm 50. Not hairy. No moobs. 134lbs and ready to run a very respectable pace on Labor day, on a hot, hilly course: I'm going bare chested.
Problem is- there will be 1500 people in this race, and my car will be parked a mile away. One thing to be on-course, running. But- it'll be weird hanging out afterwards shirtless. I'm thinking of ripping the shirt off just before the race starts, and tucking it in the side of my shorts.
I've done this before.
I usually don't run when warm out. If it's over 80 my shirt is off almost all of the time and so is mostly every other male's on the team. It's not a big deal honestly.
The times that people are looking at you funny for this - most of those looks have nothing to do with you running shirtless; in fact, they probably weren't looking at you at all, but since it was in your head you are interpreting every glance to have some meaning that it likely does not.
