Ed Whitlock's training plan is probably not the best training method to maximize naturally gifted runners, but a for a guy like me who's not a natural runner and a person who started running to keep in shape, it's been working out well. I'm not even close to Ed's type of time duration, but I've been able to run injury free, and running is really fun.
I just started running at about same amount of length every day, and very slowly lengthen my duration. I started off at running just 10 minutes per day! And would increase slowly by about a minute a week for awhile. Then after awhile, I started to increase little more as I started to run pain free as I would run every day but not push myself too hard, I was able to listen to my body and do adjustments. I'm now up to running 40 minutes everyday, and will be increasing my running time by 5 minutes every month.
I did my first 5K in a very long time, and ran 20:39. I know it's very slow compared to all of you on here, but I'm 31, and I've finally been able to string together several months without getting injured and had to stop.
I plan on continue to do races over the weekend as my speed workout. I'll probably start doing 10K once I'm doing over an hour of running per day. I'm planning on continue to increase duration until I reach 2 hours. I want to go longer, but I think two hours is the max that I will have time to run everyday.
I'll post my time for my next race.
