You may be new to the sport, but, typically, records in distance races in this era are set using "pacemakers". It's a fairly normal occurrence in Diamond League races.
You may remember a few years ago when Chris Solinsky broke the American Record in the 10000m (NOT a Diamond League race, but a record attempt), there were pacemakers through about 7000m. At that point Rupp led - on American Record pace - until Solinsky took the lead with 800m left.
Solinsky got the record, and it wasn't disrespectful or cowardly in any way; it simply is the way fast races are run.
