8x400 @ 800 race pace with 2min break?
8x400 @ 800 race pace with 2min break?
Depends.
If one's 400m PR is 51.0 and his 800m PR is 2:00: Might be
If one's 400m PR is 57.0 and his 800m PR is 2:00: No
Not realistic. I doubt that anyone could do 3 with that short a rest. I also doubt that anyone could do 8 with even 10 minutes rest. I've read claims that Wohlhuter did 4 with like 30 seconds rest but I don't believe it.
Yeah I reckon people could do 3. 4 would be very tough on 2 mins, though I think it can be done on 3 mins' rest. Alternatively do 2 x 2 x 400 with 2 mins rest between reps and 5 mins between sets. Tough, but that can be done at very close to 800 pace and is an excellent indicator (as well as a good, tough session).
To the OP, look at the volume. Do you really think 4 x race distance in the session is appropriate for your level? Or for any level?

I would love to see a 10k runner do 8x5000 at 10k pace.

What about 8 x half marathon at marathon race pace?
These are stupid comments. A marathon runner will probably do not more than a half on race pace. So 50%.
A 10k runner can do 6xmile at race pace. so 96%
A 5k runner can do 8x1k at race pace. so 160%
A 1500m runner can do 10x400 at race pace. So 267%
What can a 800m runner do?
Last week I did 13x200 at 800m pace with 2 min rest. It was not very hard. I think 16x200 would be doable also.
The problem here is that 400 is half the distance of 800 and you have only 2 min rest.

You got that the wrong way round.
I didn't think so I went out to watch my hs track teams practice yesterday and have always felt my former coach had no clue what he was doing. And he had this workout planned for our guys who ran 4x8 mile and 2 mile and were getting ready for state qualifiers this weekend. Needless to say they didn't hit one on the goal time of 68 seeing that they are 2:17 800guys so after two I pulled them to the side and said this workout is stupid and darn near impossible slow it down to mile pace it was meddlesome but was that the right thing to do? It helped one of them but the other two were already shot
Regular workouts should not be too demanding either physically or mentally. All the different types of training should complement each other so that the blend of speed and endurance makes each workout go smoothly.
Above all it should be fun for them, not torture.
It would have been better if you pulled the coach aside.

I coached runners who could do 8 X 400 in the 65-68 second range. None of them were pure 800 guys, but were in the mid 1:50's for 8, 4:10's for 16, and low 9:00 for 32. Now going by their 800 PR's, they would have to run 57-58 per 400. I could see that lasting about 3, maybe 4 of them, but it would go way downhill after that. So in answer to your question, No.
GW I have multiple times I told it to him when I was his athlete and since I have been gone I even did tell him before the workout.I don't proclaim to know all things running by any means. I'm decently well read on the subject of running physiology so I feel like I could be of some benefit especially to younger runners on the team, but he doesn't listen at all.
65-68 Sounds ridiculously slow for those kinds of times.

That was pretty much what we were saying, idiot.

8x400 in 68 with 2 minutes is a sissy workout for someone who can do 8x400 in 70 without stopping.
