Please don't be a patronizing a$$. I've done plenty of grueling, lengthy hikes myself and enjoyed them. It requires fitness, endurance, preparation, time and skill. I get the sense that the OP's wife doesn't have much of this and hence, it is probably something she would interpret as a punishment and/or resent.
The big problem with many of these solutions is not that they won't work is that the solutions are HARDER then the problem. Big hike, changing your diet all around, marathon running, etc. etc. are MORE DIFFICULT than losing weight! The trick is inch by inch its a cinch, mile by mile its a trial. The thing to do is start with ONE STEP that is EASY to do and ONLY do that step THEN go forward with another step when you are ready. AND let person who is trying to lose weight CHOOSE THAT STEP! Some things you can try are: TEN MINUTES of EASY Yoga, Tai Chi, etc. everyday. Or walk or ride a bike for 20 minutes everyday. Or sex for 15 minutes everyday! Simple and easy. Choose an easy activity people want to do and DO IT everyday. Not rocket science.
