I've never understood running a 10k "for the victims". You are just taking something terrible and making it about you.
Even if you are raising money, just ask for donations and send them to the victims! You don't need a 10k race to justify giving money.
"oh look at me I'm running a marathon FOR cancer patients." No you are NOT, you are running a marathon for YOU. Everyone is aware of cancer, so racing for cancer "awareness" is a load of BS.
This is 100% how I've always thought about such people/actions. Aren't there whole team-in-training things where people raise $ for a charity AND so they can fly to, oh, I don't know, somewhere like Hawaii to run a marathon and feel like they are a hero?? Maybe they are not all like that, but I think many are. JUST PONY UP THE $ OR RAISE IT ANONYMOUSLY IF YOU WANT TO HELP. But no, you're 100% right, they instead feel the need to become a hero (in their mind), and instead need to use a disease or tragedy as an excuse to get themselves in great shape, and then post their daily training, and selfies of them basically flexing every day (all in the name of their cause of course). because if all of that other extraneous stuff didn't happen, the $ they raised would be what....useless??
Talk about your self-absorption. Here's the thinking they don't acknowledge that goes into their reasoning: 'hey, here is a perfect opportunity for me to get attention, get in shape, take a trip (on the dime of others) all while pretending I am doing it ALL in a self-less way! and I am sure lots of my "friends" on face-book will tell me I am "awesome" and "amazing" and a "great person." Win-WIN!' Phonies.
