Why would anyone 'bonk' during a "long" training run? I do plenty of 20 milers without ever bonking and I rarely eat anything before I start them. Even before a marathon I eat very minimally, it's just never been necessary for me to do that and finish at a good clip. I've slowed substantially at the end of a few marathons but that had everything to do with less than adequate training for the pace I ran and not lack of fuel (and I hate when people use the words fuel, fueling, hydrating - STFU man, and get your miles up).
If speedwork is so helpful, why not do it all of the time? See the bad logic? Training is about the complete balance of everything. If you're bonking in long runs, you're either running too fast for that individual run or during the week, or are not running enough mileage. What's a typical week look like for you during a normal marathon training week?
What are your PR's for the 5k, half and full?
Honestly, how many serious runners are fueling during long runs? I run with some solid guys (2:25-2:30, so not elite) and nobody ever takes food on during a run. I could see it during a run with serious time at MP, but you'd better not be bonking during a steady long run, 20 miles or no.
But a depletion run as I understand it isn't really about bonking, it's about performing WELL while glycogen depleted. You aren't bonking, you're running on the edge.
