For starters is it more important to get yourself used to running fast say 1-2 miles a day working to get down below six minute miles or to run more miles but at an easier pace?
Lots of the posts here contradict each other. It is honestly confusing.

It's not one or the other.
You need to mix up your paces. Do a lot of miles, definitely. Make some days easy, some days...medium, and some days fast.
