I get sick, puking after I finish my long runs. I usually hit around 20-23 miles, longest run around 2:53 or so. I never hydrated much until recently while on the run. This past saturday during a 22.5 mile long run, I drank an ensure about 40 minutes before I ran. Along the run, I didnt drink anything until the 11.25 marker (Halfway of a double loop course) I took in a mixture of Lava Gel (Less sugar than other gels, and two lava salt tabs broken and put into the gel and water mixture)My stomach was grinding a bit, I took a good drink of the mixture and then consumed around 6 oz of water as well. Within two minutes my stomach pain discontinued and I felt much better. I grinded out the loop pretty hard but after 33 minutes of picking up the pace I puked for a decent while, 30 seconds or longer. My thought is this:
1.) I needed to drink more on the run, i.e. every 3-4 miles, instead of waiting until the 11.25 marker.
2.) The ensure could have disrupted my stomach a little bit, thus the reasoning for vomitting later, it was the first thing in the stomach.
What do you all take in / eat , before long runs, marathons. I realize this is an electrolyte issue and I already have a very sensitive stomach to begin with.
