Evaluation of American runners:
Broe - A++, excellent effort. That time is probably close to 13:15 on the track considering all the turns on this course and the steep climb within the finally 400m (although you go down this hill at the start). It's refreshing to see the national champ actually finish first in the race. Last year's champ, Henry Dennis, stated that he was racing to beat the Kenyans. A valiant effort on his part, but he finished 30 seconds behind the winner. Broe actually followed through and got the job done.
Shay - B, nice job considering he was coming off a 20K six days beforehand. He was third last year, running 14:06, so a faster time and a higher place deserves praise. Broe, Meb, and Dan Browne are the only Americans to have run faster than Shay on this course in the last three years.
Gabrielson - B, also a nice job, expecially since it was his first year running this event. Sub 14 minutes just looks a lot better, though, as does a top ten finish.
Dirks, Watson, Eberly - C, Dirks was runner up last year,so finishing 4th must have been disappointing. Watson a talent and should be running a lot faster than this on the roads. He hasn't had a success road career so far. It might be in his best interest to just stick to the track. Eberly did a good job. His success can only be credit to the fact that he's running for the Hansons now.
Mitchell - C-, congrats Teddy; you picked up a few bucks. Everyone knows that the only reason you showed up. What's pathetic is that a guy who focuses all his training on the marathon is able to show up that the national 5k championship and win money.
Mortimer, Hubbard, Menafee - D, the roads ain't the track, boys. You got to be a savage to succeed on the road. This aint no time trial.
Lane - D-, one spot from making the olympic team to getting smoked. You should be taking some down time, not racing for alittle cash.
Pope - C, nice race for an old guy, but Eddy ran more than 20 seconds faster last year (granted his performances are now all in question).
All other invited runners - F, why did you even show up.
