I don't think it's a good idea personally.
You're starting from the assumption that you are going to write a vapid thank you note and concluding that you should not write a thank you note at all based on this assumption. Of course, you also have the option of writing a thank you note that isn't vapid.
Presumably you learned something new about the company's philosophy, culture, strategy, plans for the future, etc. during your interview. Are you excited about any of the things you learned? Use the thank you note to voice/reiterate your excitement.
Write the thank you note. If you send a boilerplate email instead of saying something intelligent, that's you fault.
