Dude you don't have to put spaces before all your punctuation.
I want to know some of the feedback from the athletes: is there a large consensus if the course was great/ok/fair/challenging/terrible/etc? Any quotes out there?

He didn't.
I am a 60+ guy who was out on the course for a long time. I ran a road 10K a few months ago almost 9 minutes faster than I ran this course yesterday. Having said that, I thought it was great. This was XC. You had to know how to shift gears, you had to pay attention to your line and your footing through sections, and you had to use some agility. I was wearing spikes and never was concerned about slipping. The two prior days I ran the course for practice without spikes there were a couple of muddy, off-camber dirt sections that were pretty scary. Everyone I dealt with running the event was great and helpful. The hotel arrangements and shuttle to the course worked great. I could not have asked for a better overall race experience. If you didn't like this, you should be thinking about indoor track, not, XC.
Also, no one has mentioned the performance of Lee Troop, who won the Masters race. He looked amazing out there.
The course was unique for being equally tough on the downhills and uphill. More than one runner face-planted on a steep downhill section where there were roots, rocks and bumpy ground, like this guy who went down hard right on front of me when I was watching the open men's race. I got this shot of him eating dirt:
http://swensonphoto.smugmug.com/USATF-XC-championships/I also saw several women finish the open race with dirt streaks on their thighs and back, so obviously there were some big falls in that race, too.
I didn't fall in the masters race. Probably ran the downhill stretches too conservatively.
That is former Cornell Runner Sam Luff (Former PA Runner)(brojo love)
Also in one of the pictures is New Balance Boston's Erin Dromgoole another former Ivy League all-american at Dartmouth. More Brojo love
Why did German run so slow
The course reminded me of a ski slope except we didn't get to ride in a lift on the way up. I was fine on the downhills, but there was not enough of them to make up for the hobbling I did on the ups. It started up a big hill, then we turned right and continued up a gradual hill. Then there was a steep downhill with some slick mud and rocks with an immediate right turn at the bottom (where there were some wipe-outs). Then I think came the winding zig-zag before climbing up the same hill we started on, except this time we were off to the side where it was more of a rolling stair-step hill and had hay bails at the top. Repeat X 3 (women) or 5 (men). It wasn't the worst course I've run on, but it was the worst race I've had in a long time. I felt like I'd never run before and like I was out of shape. My pace was slower than most of my easy runs. I was mentally out before we started. My legs cramped up like at the end of a marathon for the entire race. I'd like to blame the uphills (which I suck at) and the altitude, but it is what it is. Others ran great, so I shouldn't bitch about the course. Crappy race experiences like this at least help me learn my strengths and weaknesses as a runner. I'm looking forward to keeping it on the 'crete from now on.
54yo here. Texrunnergrl described the course perfectly.
As others have said it was true XC. No rhythm to be found, just one challenge after another. I actually do better on the track/roads, but I loved the course and compliment Max King for designing it. I hope this kind of course is on the menu again in the future.
I don't know if it was "true cross country" or not. But its sounds like an exceptionally challenging and high risk course. Sure the Oregon Project pulled out because it wasn't
"Rupp Certified". But it would have been A LOT more fun for fans of the sport of OP runners were there competing. I could be wrong; I wasn't there, but it sounds like this needed a little bit of a gimmick. Are Club Nationals just catering to the Tough Mudder crowd?
Shoelace came untied.(couldn't resist)

lol that's what I was thinking. Sounds like the course I ran for the NY Spartan which was on a ski resort and ended up being the day after a torrential downpour. The uphills were tough for sure but I had more trouble with the downhills because any time I tried to gain speed on a downhill I wiped out hard. I face planted 4-5 times in that race. Was wearing racing flats, not spikes or trail shoes which probably didn't help.
yep excellent description. only the last section where it sloped away from the turn was really nasty. But it should be said had that race been a week earlier when they got dumped on by all that snow. the course would have been much much worse and someone could have gotten hurt pretty badly. Talking to the some fo the usatf and local Bend people they did spend a lot of time and effort on the race and entire weekend and it was very well done.
I rarely post on LR, but since I was at the race, I thought I would.
I loved it. I loved the competitiveness of the course and competition. I loved how you really had to pick your spots to conserve energy and to push it. All-in-all, I wish there were ore races like this for post-collegiate runners as we are basically stuck in road race land.
The only part of the course I didn't like was the sharp right turn where you could go slip downhill. Several fell there, including a guy on my team. I took it very conservative on that spot as to not fall.
I also very much enjoyed the Picky Bars Party. I was able to meet and talk to (as well as dance with) some athletes that previously I had only read about online or in magazines. It was a great event and great party to cap off the day. I'm curious how the "official dance" was???
The next day, I was able to put down 15 more miles with some local runners on the trails. Bend seems like a great town. If a teaching position ever opens there, I will seriously consider it.
If someone doesn't want to run a tough course in which injury risk is higher, then that is there prerogative. I don't give a shit. Give me a bunch of "blue collar" runners to line up with on a fun and challenging course and I'll have a blast.
Overall, it was one of the best running related weekends I have ever had. I feel closer to my club team and more motivated to train (as soon as my hamstrings and calves recover) than ever.
Thanks USATF, Max King, town of Bend (plus Lauren Fleshman) for providing us with such a great experience this past weekend....
I second this post. It was an awesome race followed up by a fun party by pickybars. It was great seeing and talking to the pros at the after party like, Webb, Jager, Fernandez, Riley Masters, Brie, and many others. They all seemed like approachable down to earth people. I think if the people here posting all of the negative dribble ever met any of the pros in person they'd think twice before saying such garbage as all of the pros were great people.

I did not run this year, but I've talked to 2 people that did and both of them contradict what you said. They had no complaints about any aspect of the event even though they both ran poorly. The race definitely favored strenght type runners with some agility.
