Meanwhile, the elite Kenyans who go out and win all the marathons very rarely run over two hours. Most of their "long runs" are actually fast, timed runs over 30 or 35km.

Wasn't Sammy Wanjiru an elite Kenyan?

Wouldn't surprise me if the Africans have been sandbagging all these years and most have always run 3 hour plus long runs. There's a reason the US sucks at elite marathoning. Most guys do just enough to get to the race healthy and collect their appearance fee. Can't fault them. Why push yourself to the limit and risk injury when you can make good coin by being the first or second American? Solinsky pushed limits and look at him now. Injured and burned out. That said, he had 3 months of top tier performances.
Nothing new, Bekele has always been doing 3 hour runs at 5:40 pace.

bekele is a stupid idiot. long slow distance makes long slow runner.
UNLESS HE IS DOING A 3 HOUR RACE, HE IS WASTING HIS TIME AND DESTROYING HIS KNEES BY RUNNING FOR 3 HOURS.
the more pointless miles he runs, the shorter his running career will be. I hope he has already see a doctor about his future knee and hip replacements. in the future he will be sitting around watching all the low mileage guys like lagat and webb still competing at the world level, and he will be bed ridden with tons of arthritic problems and wishing he didn't do all those pointless miles and useless heart beats.
I don't know many ultra-runners in the condition you mention.
But I know many 26.2'ers w/ lesser long runs, who keep hitting a wall at 20 miles.
Most of the weekend warriors who live around me who are training for the marathon run about 10:00/mile or slower, so once they get to 18 miles in their build ups, they are at 3 hours. Many of them are doing 15-16 mile runs in 3 hours.
Aerobically, it is relatively similar to Bekele's effort, and the force load on the skeleton is about the same as well. Bekele no doubt strikes the ground quicker, but he is considerably lighter.
If the greatest distance runner in the world was getting outworked by a bunch of 4:30 marathons, then he should be ashamed.
I;ve never trained to run a competitive marathon, but doing regular long runs over race distance is a staple of training for any other distance. Make sense he should regularly be running 30+ milers. I don't know if this can be done weekly without impacting the quality or volume of other training sessions, but it seems like if you want to be an elite marathoner a 30 miler at 5:30 or 6 min pace shouldn't be a crushing workout.
Well Bekele's race will be shorter in duration. He'll be running at most 2:10.
The 4:30 mararthoners only run for 3 hours. They are still not running longer than their race will be.
What is so alarming?
I know girls who regularly do 3 hr runs in their build-up. So the best distance runner in history is over training? I'm sure he runs close to 3 hrs every other day of the week. One day a week he does it all in one run and at a slower pace.

G. Mutai's long runs are MUCH longer than 2 hours...

because he seems content with his three thats why hes able to do it idiot
and what are you? a coach? why dont you go be his coach since you know EXACTLY what works automatically for everyone
as a percentage of his overall weekly mileage it's really not that much, 20-25%. According to some REAL exercise physiologists like Jack Daniels, not some phony hiding behind a moniker this is optimal.
Having trained with top Kenyans I reckon they'd find it almost impossible to run any of their training runs at 8min mile pace, whatever the distance, that would only happen if they were absolutely buggered, same with KB, etc. Could be wrong though.

BTW, Wanjiru's LR pace, according to what he said in an interviwe, was ~8min/mile.
5:08 per kilometer is approx 8:00 per mile. Maybe that is Bekele's pace.

But Wanjiru was trained in the Japanese system, not in Kenya.

What is the altitude of the Rift Valley Region? How about Eldoret?

A 3 hour long run is nearly 1.5 times his race time. Are these girls running one and a half times as much time as they will on race day?
All I know is if your average ultra runner can do weekly 4-5 hr runs, Bekele can probably do weekly 3 hour runs.

Bekele should be running for 6 hours.
