It's a lake with fish swimming it it and a beach around it.

It represents Salazar's recovery from his heart attack, mixed with a laurel wreath for the Olympics. Seriously, that's what it is.

I never thought of that
this actually makes sense

Pretty sure the first incarnation of the NOP singlet was a tribute to Geoffrey Hollister.
The Hollister singlet was a tribute only when he passed a few years back.

And they are both wearing flats and not spikes so definitly a workout
Rupp has blood on his leg. What type secret workout is that?
Blood transfusion between race & workout perhaps?
Not 100% convinced - sure they would have changed out of singlet & taken numbers off shorts. Oh well - not gonna lose sleep about it.

So the skull is really supposed to be Alberto Salazar's skull? Not Pre or Geoffrey Hollister's skull?
I can see that the part on the outside could be a laurel wreath instead of wings, but for those of you saying the shape in the middle is a phantom, it's obviously a skull.
It is not a laurel wreath. Those are duck wings. Oregon. Ducks.

That has to be the answer. That is so Alberto.
They thought it would make a great tattoo.

No, they are duck wings. Seriously.
http://www.cliparthut.com/clip-arts/1018/oregon-ducks-logo-with-wings-1018487.jpgSo that's the logo: Alberto Salazar's skull with duck wings?
And the symbolism is that Alberto had a bad heart attack and ran for the UofO?
Honestly, those seem like weird things to focus on for a team symbol. No one else on the team had a heart attack and only some of them like Rupp ran for Oregon.
remember that there have been two Alberto death moments. the first was in his prime, when he nearly ran himself to death, was given last rites, etc.
The second was the heart attack
so the meaning of the skull suggests a never quit, never die attitude as much as it suggests the heart attack.

Uh... Ever heard of the OREGON Project?
Also, my daughters Nike soccer cleats have a big skull on them too, so it might just be a Nike thing.

I always thought Oregon Project referred to the project being in the state of Oregon (in Portland/Beaverton), not the University of Oregon (in Eugene).
I don't think duck wings are a symbol for the whole state of Oregon. Since Oregon is the "Beaver State," a beaver tail might be a symbol for the whole state, even if it is the mascot of Oregon State, but I don't think duck wings are.
Thanks for confirming that they are not Oregon Duck wings but an Olympic wreath.

I don't know the answer to this. Some people are saying duck wings and some people are saying laurel wreath.
There seem to be a lot of guesses, but has anyone ever heard an official explanation?
