Of that, $97 went to the shirt, plus $1 to your mom, $1 to your dad, and $1 to your pocket. 97+1+1+1 = 100.

you have:

You owe:

$98 to mom and dad

Fair and Balanced.

The way you stated the problem is ass-backwards and purposely worded to be confusing. There is no missing dollar.

Where is the money right now?

Your poor parents have $2. The fact that you borrowed from and paid them back separately is confusing and irrelevant, although it does suggest they are divorced (and it's probably your fault).

You have $98. There's $1 in your pocket plus the $97 value of your crappy, overpriced shirt. You could also say you have $1 and the store has $97. Either way, it accounts for the other $98.

2 + 98 = 100

Check it on a calculator if you need to.

Please don't become an accountant or a financial adviser if this is indicative of your general thinking process.

you guys are hopeless. This is just an alternate version of a pretty well known riddle.

You immediately lost all your cred when you decided any shirt was worth $97.

Silly letsrunners, this isn't a math problem, it is an accounting problem. The $98 you owe is a liability, and the $1 you have with the $97 shirt are your assets. So you actually have $2 less then you started with because you paid down the liability with cash.

For the record I won't buy a shirt that costs less than $150.
