I ran one marathon in 2005 in 3:00:26. In the summer of 2001 my one rep max was 315. I wasn't lifting anymore in 2005, but in three weeks time I could have whipped myself in good enough shape to bench at least 250.

2:48 this year and 295 bench. Shorter races are a lot easier at this weight, that's for sure.
When I was benching over 300 lbs I did run a 4:50 1600 m.
Your mile PR and lift half of it:
For example, 4:20 mile, bench press 210. I think that formula works too.
Stone Cutter,
I'm currently engaging in a personal challenge similar to this, but I've set the challenge at benching >= 300 lbs and running < a 3:00 marathon within three weeks of one another. I was up to 305 lbs for a brief period (ie. I did two reps at my best day) as an undergraduate and PR's with 2:52 at Boston a few years ago, but haven't been close to doing both at the same time yet. I got the inspiration to do this as an undergraduate when I finished the Chicago Marathon in 2:59 right behind a guy I had met who had been a football player at the University of Illinois. I thought he could probably bench 300 and the idea got into my head. Now I'm in my mid 30's and figure my window for getting the strength in is getting smaller. Both my running and lifting buddies think I'm nuts. For reference, I'm about 6'2" 190 lbs.
I'd be up for trying to get more people into the challenge or a modification of it. I'm currently in the DC area and up for trying to set up a challenge for folks to meet for a 2014 marathon for a marathon within several hours drive of here.

Are you people serious?? I know nobody close to this. There is a local 2:10 guy who maybe...
Everyone else around here (sub 3) is a string bean, with no hope of putting up 225. The people who can bench more than that are not small people.
If you can do this at the same time in life, you are in rare air.
Guess people are posting what they could bench long ago.
Bench 240
Marathon PB- 2:35:28
But to think I could have benched 240 while training for the marathon is nuts....and if you think the average Kenyan can bench over 200lbs you are dreaming--no frickin' way a 116lb dude can bench that much.

Plenty of 116 pound guys can bench over 200 lbs. That-s not even a lot form that weight.
That's not even a lot for that weight*.
Bench Max 360
Marathon PR 2:52
Both in the same month.
Hey Tim, how did your challenge go? I'm working on one for June, a sub 4 hour marathon and 400 pound bench on same day.
Rick
Bench 152
Marathon 2:27
A good indicator of overall fitness is how much you can bench WHILE you're at your fastest. Otherwise, spend five years focusing just on running, then spend five years focusing just on lifting and bulking.
I've tried getting better at both at the same time. When I do, the rest of my life suffers (always EXHAUSTED). So it's usually just one or the other.
Bench max 225 (1999)
Weight at the time was 170
Marathon PR 3:35 (2014)
Weight at the time was 140
Bench current is 135 (2015)
Weight current is 140
Looking more like a T-Rex these days, despite finishing a few Ironmans in the past few years.
Marathon PR - 2:42:35
Bench press max/PR - 245lbs
(same year)
2:16:40 at 22yo and 125lb.
185 at 55yo and 145lb.
I call BS on 90% of the posters here claiming over 200lb.

BS numbers on letsrun? Say it ain't so.
What I want to know is, will a strong bench press help me move my apartment in India?
I ran a 2:09 marathon with a broken femur and bench pressed 720 lb with a severed triceps the same day.
I am getting there. I ran 2:35 pretty recently @135 pounds. I spent the last 6 months lifting because of an injury and am now benching ~200 @145 pounds. I think I could get there in another 6 months or so.
Since running doesn't negatively affect your upper body strength nearly as much as lower body I would expect it to be easier to put up strong bench numbers....how about a squat that equals your marathon time?
2:30 is 250lb
3:00 is 300lb
I've seen a lot of 4:00/400lb guys
...it gets harder as you get faster.
I'm 275lb squat....maybe 3:00 marathon shape...need to get squat up...my deadlift is getting solid...315 for 7 reps at 165lb.
