What does it even matter? Ritz crashed and burned with severe quad cramps the last 5 miles of the race... So it's not like his gu packign really even worked.

drinking that much gatorade will mess with your performance. The kenyans got it right in drinking very little-allowing thirst to be your guide and then just drinking water. all the sodium in gatorade is not what your body needs to compete. you (we) have all been duped by the sports drink industry into thinking because when we sweat we excrete seom sodium, that we must pump large amounts back inot our bodies. you just need some sugar (gels) and water and you will be set to go.
Yeah and doctors have duped us into believing that hyponatremia really exists!
Where's the OP?

Hyponatremia arises in extreme cases where people drink far more water than they need to. If you drink to thirst it's never going to happen.

Here I am.
When I made the thread, I thought every 1.5 miles sounded like a lot, so I Googled the nutrition facts for Gatorade and the first thing I came up with was this:
http://caloriecount.about.com/calories-gatorade-energy-drink-i88302(310 calories per 12 oz serving). Then I Googled the calories in GU gel, which was 100 for the vanilla bean flavor. I am pretty sure I was right on the GU number, but apparently I was wrong on the Gatorade.
The number seemed high but I thought maybe it was possible since I'm not sure of any obvious drawbacks to taking in too many calories in the marathon and thought when you have as much on the line as Ritz you don't want to take chances. Apparently Gatorade only has 110 calories per serving? That's what I get for making the thread in a rush.
Perhaps he is not drinking for thirst, but rather, for calories. Gatorade has 110mg of sodium per 8 oz. One GU gel has 60mg per packet. Very close. So yeah, you're wrong and misunderstanding Noakes. Re-read the book and come back later...
Hardloper, next time, please don't answer so honestly. This could have been a perfect thread to harass you for years.

50 calories per 8 ounces.
