What's a good 1/2 marathon benchmark for running a 3:10 marathon. Just curious what others have successfully used as a measuring stick for this. By this I mean what should I aim to run in a half before a marathon training cycle starts.

i've been able to do it in the past on about a 1:31 -- but right around a 1:30 is probably safer.
It depends. Are you a fast twitcher or slow twitcher? In other words, how do you carry your speed? Look at the relationship between your 5k, 10k and HM. This will give you a good indication if 3:10 is doable.

I would definitely say that a 1:30 half indicates 3:10 marathon potential. This would be for a half that you do like 4-6 weeks out from your marathon though, not before the training cycle altogether. If you can manage a 1:35 (exactly 3:10 pace), 16 weeks of solid marathon training should get you to 3:10. You just have to train hard and smart.
Thanks for the input. I can currently run 1:35 HM without too much effort and have a PR of 1:31, I feel if I can get to sub 1:30 at the beginning of a marathon training cycle I should be heading in the right direction.

funny this is posted today. i was thinking of trying to do an LR survey of peoples pace difference between 5k, 13.1, and marathon and whether or not people considered themselves a fast or slow twitcher.
i have a 24 sec difference between my 5k pace and my 13.1 pace and i'm training for my first marathon this decade but have done many 1/2s. i'm a slow twitcher and am trying to get a feel for what my mara pace should be. started out running them around 20 secs slower than 1/2 pace but they have morphed to around 13 secs/mile slower than 1/2 pace. i'm not sure if this is a mistake and i'm kidding myself or if the differential between my 1/2 and full pace could really be that small.
Not sure what I am to be honest. My 5k pace is about 6:00, half is about 6:55, so a :55 second drop off from 5k to half marathon?!?!

woah, you must have some speed.
my 5k one week before a 1/2 was 6:35 pace and my 1/2 was 6:53 pace. i can't even run 800 at 6:00 pace right now. i would give alot for a few fast twitch muscles.
