Dumb question but how would you pace this? i'm thinking about going pretty hard off the get go.. a mistake? Or just go comfortably?

Run the 1.5 miles downhill like it's a 2 mile race and then hang on.
Couldn't disagree more. Bank energy not time. Come through the 3k mark at your usual pace and then explode.
Interesting question. I would try to run as much of the downhill portion backwards as you can while maintaining pr pace. When you can no longer hold pr pace, do a controlled spin to run forward again. You will find that your forward running muscles are fresh and you can tackle the hilly section with fresh legs while your competitors have substantial frontal fatigue.
Roll the downhill sideways, that way you'll be fresh when you get up and then it's just a 3.5 mile race.
I meant then it's just a 2,585984 km race.
Go out with the same perceived effort of any 5K. Your mile split might be a bit quick, but you won't be straining. Be mentally prepared for the true race beginning when the race starts uphill.
