I'm in Rome this week, which involved travel from my country of residence elsewhere in Europe, and here's what I can report:
- both airports were fairly quiet
- I've been through more temperature checks than I can count, multiple times in both airports, each time entering the hotel, and entering shopping centers
- everyone here has a mask and wears it indoors. Most people wear their masks outdoors (often around their chin or hanging off one ear
- I have signed several forms (airline, hotel, restaurants) in case they discover a case and need to track me down
- every store has hand sanitizer out for the customers with signs telling people to use it
- many stores limit the number of customers
- there are barely any tourists. This is close to low season for tourists, but it's way quieter than usual
- everything is open, and Romans are out and about living "normally"
So obviously the economy is still impacted, but everyone here is taking this very seriously. There is no polarized political debate; society has chosen lives over livelihoods.
