In light of the recent Arcadia issue, and the public realizing more and more how little school administrations ACTUALLY care about the students, I would like to introduce a brief story of my school and ask for advice.
I will keep my high school anonymous, but give the general story as to what has been going on. Three years ago, we had a rising cross country team, one that became league champions and was growing stronger under the guidance of an experienced, dedicated coach who not only took teams to State (we live in a competitive state, so it was a big deal), but produced two section champions in the short time he worked there. The coach, like the Arcadia coach, may not have been perfect to everybody, but he was strict and produced results. Three years ago, a senior on the team who had been having a sub-par season and began to walk a lot became upset with some of the yelling that went on during intervals (Being there myself, none of this was derogatory or insulting, just really motivating and intimidating, something that made you want to push yourself even harder). This girl complained to her mom, who had a high status among the school board, and the coach was fired.
Fast forward three years to now. The good coach was gone (we tried and tried to reinstate him but NOTHING worked) and the program has been jumping from one coach to the next every season. The bulk of the team quit and the team is roughly 1/3 the size it was, with 1/3 the success. The cross country season just began. We were unsure who the coach would be until the first day of school, when we found out it was THAT GIRL, recently dropped out of college and back in town. I'm SICK and TIRED of my high school not giving a crap about our athletes. One of my best friends is a senior now on the team with a legitimate shot of getting noticed by colleges. We have a rising sophomore who is one of the top underclassmen in the section (surprising considering he doesn't even have a coach). I'm alright, but I really love running. I want myself and my teammates to have EVERY possible opportunity possible to succeed, and I can tell you that this girl knows NOTHING about running. I'm not exaggerating. I would bet anything she doesn't know the name of one pro runner, will be a TERRIBLE coach and, I know for a fact that she is only there because her mom has the ins with the school board.
What can I/ my team do? Three years ago, we had a petition signed by roughly 70 people to reinstate the good coach, went to the school board meeting and had many people complain, kept on pushing the issue, etc. but nothing worked. After all the crap we went through trying to get my old coach back and having no success, and no one in the school board even care,I'm ready to start taking it to a different level and sabotage her, etc. But I know that would only be a detriment to my friend and the sophomore's season, so I wouldn't actually do this.
Please, is there ANYTHING we can do to get her out of there and at least get someone who knows SOMETHING about running, in? She is 20 (?), drop out, and as I said, I believe she only got the job because her mom has good relations with the board. Please offer your advice (preferably something besides a petition or compaining to the AD/principal/school board, because we've gone through that all before). Thank you for reading, sorry it was so long.
