I had an ablation done at the age of 29 for pretty bad afib.
First of all, right before the surgery a nurse warned me that I was going to feel like I got hit by a truck when I woke up. She was correct. Not sure if this is common for others. I had a hard time breathing especially when laying down for at least a week.
Second, the damaged my phrenic nerve which took at least 6 months to heal. For the first few months of that running was basically impossible because air got squeezed out of my lungs (or at least it felt like it) when I ran.
Third, my heart rate was totally screwed up for 6 months to a year afterwards. My max heart rate was way lower than normal. No matter how hard I tried to work (was nordic skiing at the time), I couldn't go as fast as normal and couldn't get to a normal max rate. However, I didn't have any arrhythmia and that is still the case several years later.
However, after all of the initial recovering, I got back to running and went under 2:30 in the marathon which was good enough for me as prior to the surgery I had run one of them and it was 2:31.
You may have a longer recovery than you're hoping for but it's worth it if the surgery works. Go to a great doctor who has done hundreds of procedures if at all possible. Good luck.
