Hi,
I've been base training all summer, with no problems, until I was diagnosed with Supraventricular Tachycardia. Now, I might get a cardiac ablation.
Here's a history first (you can skip all this, but you might want to read it)
I'm a 17 year old male, (turning 18 next month) entering senior year.
For 4 years, I have had random episodes of fast heart rate, in which my HR would go from normal to 180-250 BPM
(my "normal" max is 204, tested)
Usually around 220 or so BPM. Weird thing is, they NEVER happened while running.
I used to take Taekwondo classes (a year ago) and an episode would start during a punch or kick.
What I usually do is, during an episode, I stop what I'm doing, and do vagal maneuvers. The episode goes away within a minute or two.
These episodes are OCCASSIONAL, they have never increased in frequency, but always scared me, as I didn't know what they were (until now that is). I would always have the same symptoms, like the heart racing, which felt slightly uncomfortable, and felt crappy. Only until the episode was gone, I could resume what I was doing.
(on ONE occasion, I had an episode during a 5 mile tempo, after around mile 1. I stopped for 2 minutes, the episode went away, then I finished the remaining 4 miles with no problem, averaged at around 6:20 pace)
Only when I'm really dehydrated (my own fault for not drinking enough water) is when the episode would last for more than 5 minutes. I went to the doctor after a 10 minute episode scared my XC coach during morning summer practice (around late June) so I went to see a cardiologist. He did echocardiogram, stress test, and put an event monitor on me for a month.
Then, just hours before the monitoring was to end, after a 5 mile easy run, an episode started. It wasn't until I drank a glass of cold water that it went away. The doctor then diagnosed me with "Supraventricular Tachycardia"
And said that I needed beta blockers! (25mg Atenolol)
I'm very scared of taking them, as I HEARD what they do to distance runners, and my Natural resting HR is 42. I'm afraid it'll go dangerously low, so that, for me, is a NO GO.
Anyways, since the two options was BETA blockers or Cardiac Ablation, I decided to go on with it. But now, I'm scared of that.
My main question is, How long do I have to stop running after an ablation??? Since it's for SVT, isn't it easier???
I really don't want to stop running now, since the season's starting!
(I actually went the whole track season without an episode!)
I mean, I've been fine living with the episodes, since they only last about a minute, and occur every once in a while (sometimes every few months).
I'm also the same poster who started the "Help with HADD training." I've done some HADD this summer, and now I feel amazing. I can't lose this base!!!
Thank you, and any help would be highly appreciated.
