Rowbury and WC 1500m

You almost sound sarcastic...of course our athletes should go for medals.

An athlete may absolutely declare in two events. An athlete may absolutely choose to be an alternate in one event while already on the team in another event.

The issue is with the timing of her A standard and the appropriate forms not being filled out/submitted to USATF.

It's Rowbury's (or her agent's) fault for not contacting USATF and ensuring she was lined up to be the alternate on July 20. She didn't, so they listed Brown.

Great for Brown, kind of sucks for Robury, really sucks for Chelsea Reilly.

'Easy' is a poor word choice. There is nothing easy about winning any medal at the World Championships.

Perhaps 'attainable' is the word you should consider.

I only saw it on the front page anyway. That's how rumours spread. Mis-information repeated over time. I'm just frustrated that Rowbury isn't running in the 1500. I think she deserves a medal there, after what happened at the Olympics.

Rowbury is going to medal in the 5000.

Moser had every right to hold onto her spot as long as she did. She earned it by qualifying.

Rowbury has nothing to complain about. She failed to qualify, and then forfeited her chance to be an alternate. If she wanted to run the 1500m, she should have accepted the position as an alternate.

As for Brown, nobody did her wrong either. As an alternate, she had to be ready to race at the drop of a hat. If she ends up not being able to race because wasn't prepared to do so, she has no one to blame but herself.

1. Yes, Rowbury got 4th place in the 1500m at USATF earning her the right to be first alternate for the 1500m team

2. Yes, Rowbury expressed to USATF that she wanted to be an alternate for that event

3. Yes, Rowbury got 3rd place in the 5000m at USATF

4. Yes, Rowbury claimed her spot on the 5000m team for worlds

5. Yes, Rowbury earned the A standard at 1500m in Monaco, the day before the USATF deadline

6. Yes, USATF failed to list Rowbury as the alternate for the 1500m team

Can someone please ask the USATF why they failed at item #6 above? I sure as hell would like to know!

You forgot:

#7 NOP waits TWO WEEKS from the time of Moser's Grade II hamstring strain to notify USATF about the injury and Moser's withdrawal.

No way any decent NCAA program is going to let a potentially Grade II/III (the latter requires surgery and can end an athlete's career) hamstring strain be non-diagnosed for 2 weeks: If medical personnel did this and let an athlete train/race on it, that might be considered malpractice. I doubt that NOP let it go that long either. And the standard recovery period for a Grade II strain is 6-12 weeks. 2 week rest/recovery isn't going to get it done and Salazar and his staff should well know this: Any decent NCAA trainer is going to know this.

The hand of Nike/NOP appears to be all over this. They didn't want anyone in there that might show up a NOP drug-head.

But the 5000 might be interesting. The kicking off 14:40 is pre-2013 drug testing and passports. See the 10000 results today. If they do NOT go out in 14:40-like pace and let Shannon hang in there, she might do to them what Hicham did to them. They probably know this but might not be able to prevent it with present drug testing.

We only had to get to the second page of the thread before somebody posted something based in reality.

Interesting.. So it's not all over in the 5k? I assumed with only one event to run that defar was certain winner, whoever else could hang the pace 2/3, kickers unable to be close. If its more like the 10k this will be close..

She has a much better chance to pick up the silver or bronze with her decent 1500m kick in the 5k. Except that she is very good about getting to the finals, she has very little shot at a medal in the 1500 (after all she got outkicked by 3 from the US - how is she going outkick all but 2 in the WC)

one issue for her now is that her 5k pr is way off the leaders, so they'll be much fresher than her off of 15:20 pace. another issue is that the best 5k runners could probably go well under 4 in the 1500m. what she has going for her is that the pace will probably be slow with a hard last 400-1600, well suited for milers and she is in great 1500-3k shape right now, plus her 3k pr (8:31) is not at all shabby and indicates a potential of sub 14:50, considerably better than her actual 5k pr. Molly Huddle's never run close to 8:31, I wouldn't think. But the U.S. team, right now unaccountably weak at the 1500m despite tons of talent (Rowbury, Pierce, Martinez, Simpson, Wurth-Thomas, Cain, Moser, etc.--two of those have run sub 4 but weren't running well or at all this year), is hurt by this. Simpson will contend for a medal and Cain could do well in the last lap if well positioned but Rowbury would be a second strong medal contender.

If this is true it is complete BS! USATF was well aware of the fact that Rowbury wanted to be an alternate at 1500m.

I am also quite certain that they were well aware that she got the A Standard in Monaco. If they weren't, then they are completely incompetent at their job.

Assuming Rowbury did not "notify USATF of her A standard" in Monaco, wouldn't you think the people in charge of creating the official World Team Roster would have enough brains to reconfirm their alternates before submitting the final list to the IAAF.

Seriously, their job is to send the best team to worlds. This is not rocket science.

Please bring forward some sort of verification for #2. People are ripping on USATF when I can find no evidence of error on either side - including Rowbury.

I heard these facts from someone who knows Rowbury. Her recent posts on Twitter certainly substantiate the fact that she was under the impression that she was the next in line at 1500m:

"Sad to say that due to a technicality, I was never even given the choice of racing the 1500m. Guess life really does make decisions for you."

"Congrats to @CoryMcGeeRuns Look like it's the 5k for me at Worlds! It's nice when life makes the decisions for you. Excited for USA Team #5"
