My prediction is:
Heat 1: goes out at a walking pace. 10 people furiously kick over the last 300 meters.
Heat 2: same
Heat 3: despite knowing that an honest pace will likely get all 3 time qualifiers, they will still go out at a walking pace and furiously kick over the last 300 meters.
That's still the smart way to race for most.
You always go in it racing for place.
Lead a field of 16 runners at this level and good luck holding 10 of them off to get to the line while they draft off of you.
I think top guys like Centro and Lomong are good enough to do this. But they still put themselves at risk if they don't leave themselves a good kick.
And they want to get through the round without expending any more effort than they need to.
So I agree, I don't expect any heat going out fast to make it in on time.
It will be straight luck for whoever gets in on time.
In the Preview they say that why so many in the field. I guess they have not been paying attention. 47 guys that beat the A standard decided to run; everyone the beats USATF's A standard gets in -- no one with just the B is there.
A second nit - they list to 'top ten' and seem to ignore
Lopez Lomong Nike 3:51.21 qualified declared
Ryan Hill North Carolina State 3:54.89 qualified declared
3:51 is about 3:34.0 clearly a top mark.
