those guys couldn't negative split off a 13;33 first 5k. They ran 68s most of the second half for a 13:39. Bekele only closed in 56 high. Not too impressive.

Yeah it was horrible that Kenny B toyed with a 8+ sub 27 guys like it was a Sunday jog.
Couldn't is the wrong word, you are looking for "didn't". Bekele just responded to all moves made, put himself in good position on last lap, and did the bare minimum needed to win.
Even the last lap was run very controlled for him. He only accelerated when challenged.

I'm always thrilled by the bare minimum effort. It's why I always look for the C students when hiring.
