I qualified and ran Boston 3 times in my early twenties. I am now 34 and haven't run a marathon in 10 years. I've been struggling with running motivation due to a shift in life priorities (family, career). Following the events of yesterday's marathon, I think I might have found the inspiration necessary to get myself back to Hopkinton.
Details:
-3:05 marathon pr at Boston 2002 (a freak injury kept me from going under 3 that day) Proof...
-1:22 1/2 marathon PR that same year leading up to Boston
-Fastest 1/2 since then was a 1:27 a couple years ago without hitting more than 50 mpw in training.
-I trained pretty hard last summer, but focused on shorter distances just for fun and never went over 55 mpw. Got down to 16:30 5k and a 4:53 mile. Knee issues caused me to back way off for several months and I am currently only running 15 mpw on three 5-milers per week just to blow off steam.
I live in the Northeast, so I thought about shooting for a goal of qualifying at the Via Marathon in Allentown, PA on September 8.
1) Is it possible to get myself there?
2) Is it worth it to hammer to get under 3:05, only to be kept out of the race because of extremely high demand next year?
