After eating real meat, I can't go back to the grocery store crap.
You can be grain/legume free (along the entire food chain) and still get endurance athlete-proportions of macronutrients. I end up with about 55% carb, 15% protein, and 30% fat but that's just a personal preference.
That provides more than enough carbs for my daily needs and to replace glycogen lost while running (4 g of carbs per lb lean bodyweight a day + 75% of all carbs burned running). If you're doing a high intensity training program, you might want to bump that 75% up to 80% or even 85%.
It' not a bunch of paleo pseudoscience BS. It's easier for most people's bodies to digest root vegetables, fruits, and animal proteins than it is to digest pasta, bread, rice and beans. Also, all your food has water in it, so you don't need to pound water 24/7. Try it for 6 weeks with whatever macronutrient ratios make you comfortable
The potato is so multipurpose. Eat it plain for quick recovery (105 glycemic index), or cook it with a fatty-acidic sauce and get a carb (27 glycemic index) that releases far slower than pastas and breads.
The omega-3/omega-6 ratio thing is pretty legit as well. Don't buy the paleo sat-fat thing? Cool. use olive oil instead of coconut oil/butter and eat fish 2x a week instead of 1x a week.
I worked as a cook for a few years between undergrad and grad.
Working on a running/eating blog and will have some recipes up. Anyone interested? Anything you think I should include?
I typically have a smoothie for breakfast after my AM run and a soup, salad, entree, and desert after my PM run.
