Josh was the worst representative of distance running when he was on the bachelor. I cringed in embarassment every time he came on the screen. It was painfully sad.

I'm intrigued by the level of stupidity from morons like you.
Go ahead, criticize a guy who is a sponsors dream and a model for other elite runners who need sponsorship.
World the IAAF recognize a 1500 split world record if someone then went on to run a full mile?
Or can someone run a mile but continue on for the 2k world record?
If so I have no problem. If not it is not a valid record.
What was the old record and who held it? What the difference in time?

Those people will never be able to understand the depth of Josh Cox.
Well played!
yup they should if they make it good for them if they announce they are doing it yea
Do any of these people actually have a shot at finishing a marathon before Josh Cox would be done with a 50K? Then why are they even whining?

no one said it was easy to run a 5:32 mile 31 miles. we are questioning the idea of letting the marathon winter of a marathon race..keep running to get records.
is it fair to let a 10k winner of a race...continue on and shoot for the 12k record. or how about.....the winner of a 5k shoot for the 6k record. usatf needs to put their foot down and say that it needs to happen during an official sanctioned usatf event. if rock and roll wants to have a 50k..that is fine. but the 50k participants should not be eligible for a marathon award. can you win the 5k race if you sign up for a 10k in a simultaneous 5k/10k road race. no!
In ten years on this forum, I've never said this before, but you are an idiot.
Did he run the distance in the claimed time? If so, what's the problem? It's a time trial. It's a more-than-a-time-trial, since he actually won a race in head-to-head competition in the middle of the time trial.
Many people, viewing such a performance objectively, would say that he did it the hard way. Using contorted logic augmented with the royal "we," you're trying to argue that by doing it the hard way, he didn't really do it.
Get a life.
Better yet, try replicating his record. Oh, that's right: because he's a "self-promoter" and you're not, nobody would be interested in helping you do that.

In case we're taking a vote, let me add to the chorus saying that you're a complete idiot.
And yes, the IAAF does permit multiple world bests to be set at different distances in the same race. For example, the world best for 30K (Peter Cheruiyot Kirui, 1:27:38) was set during the 2011 Berlin Marathon.
http://www.iaaf.org/records/toplists/road-running/30-kilometres/outdoor/men/senior/All%20timeWhy don't you call the wambulance to cry about that record?
Don't we honor the 1500m record when someone runs it en route in a mile race? Seems similar.

I agree. It is not fair for him to finish a marathon and then continue on. The race was 26.2 and he crossed the line as the winner. That is the end! If he wants to 50k record - then he needs to enter a 50k and start and finish with an official field. shame on the USATF for allowing this record to stand.
Didn't Ann Trason qualify for the Marathon trials in a 50K race? I guess you don't think that should have been allowed either.
Its not a 50k race record. Its the fastest recorded 50k. According to some logic on here, you shouldn't be able to count someone's 1500m split in a mile or 1600m because it isn't what the race is.That said, his record is absolutely meaningless for 2 reasons. One, there are many Africans who could break it if given the chance, and 2, most ultras are done on trails. Doing this in a road race and track is an unfair advantage. I have no problem with saying he is the 50k record holder if in fact it is the fastest anyone has accurately recorded and ran this distance, but it is still meaningless...and i am sure he and RnR know this deep down.

IMO a race needs at minimum a winner and a loser with the underlying idea of one more competitor than prizes offered.
It needs to be sanctioned at least by an organization that maintains lists, publishes records, reviews and rules on record applications according to published rules.
Rules of timing and measurement done according to accepted practices thruout the sport.
Obviously the likes of Meb, Hall, and Ritz could run 50K faster than Josh Cox if they thought it was worth their efforts.

That is just idiotic. While most 50ks now are on trails, there have always been 50ks run on the track and roads over the years. The USATF holds a road 50k championship yearly.

yes, lets get to the real issue, you actually watched that show?
There used to be a rule requiring a race in which a record was set to have at least two finishers other than the person setting the record. That's why Ron Clarke and Jim Hogan were scouring campgrounds around Oslo trying to get third entrant the day before Clarke was going to go for the 10,000 WR at the 1965 Bislett Games. The purpose of the rule was to make sure a record was set in an actual competition.
I gather that this rule is no longer in effect otherwise Cox would have made sure there were a couple other runners who completed the 50k. If that rule is gone, I don't see how anyone can question the legitimacy of the record as long as the distance was measured accurately.
Actually I believe record attempts just needed to have 3 starters the # of finishers did not matter.
To the best of my knowledge the rule is still in effect. However, everyone who started the marathon in essence started the 50K, but just did not opt to finish.
Kudos to Josh and a fine effort! Probably the only way this record will be challenged is if someone files court papers. Good luck with that.
The average runner out there did not run a single 5:22 mile when we started and now the average runner can't run 33+ minutes for 10K, which would be... Let's just say Josh did okay!

That sounds like double dipping to me. I do not disagree that this guy can have the 50k record - but it should have been in a actual 50k race.
What?
Why?
This is a ridiculous argument.
What about the numerous 20k and 30k intermediate splits in half/full marathons that have also been road WRs?
Ultra guys are just pissed that a real runner actually took a shot at their obscure distance and easily crushed it, breaking the illusion of 50k being a "whole new world" of running.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
