Sounds a little like "soda loading" or baking soda before a distance race to reduce lactic acid. It's technically illegal and it can backfire on you too.
I've used it in the past. I can't say whether it helped prevent diarrhea, but it definitely helped with the pre-race butterflies. Illegal? I would have never guessed.
I kind of went off on a tangent. Some people use Pepto-Bismol to settle their stomach down and it has some acid-neutralizing ingredients. But baking soda is the pure stuff, and those looking for a way to buffer the lactic acid buildup in a longer (half-mary type) race have been known to practice a little "soda loading" prior to the race. This is supposed to be illegal. Not sure how they detect it though, and I couldn't imagine what too much baking soda would feel like in a long race. Ugh!
I have used Kaopektate before long runs with great success. Never tried Pepto, tho.
